Gingivitis
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth. It is easily the most common dental condition we see in children and teenagers. Gingivitis is caused by poor or improper oral hygiene and/or improper nutrition. Gingivitis is a condition that, if untreated, will lead to gum disease. The good news is that gingivitis is treatable and reversible.
How do I know if I have gingivitis?
Your dentist will diagnose gingivitis but some of the common signs and symptoms include swelling and redness of the gums, bleeding of the gums when brushing or flossing, and bad breath.
How do you treat gingivitis?
Your dentist will develop a treatment plan for you. Treatment often involves frequent check ups by your dentist and careful monitoring of your home care. Your dentist may prescribe antibiotics, vitamins, and/or fluoride mouthwash. Probably the most important thing in treating gingivitis is careful and thorough daily tooth brushing with a soft-bristle brush and flossing. Foods high in sugar should be avoided and a well-balanced diet should be eaten.
